You can read my review for BitDefender 2009 for the details. Basically, BitDefender allowed my PC to get infected with a rootkit and other malware. How? I don't know, but now only did let it happen, but when I ran a virus scan it didn't report anything wrong other than a bunch of false positives.
I installed ESET Nod32 and it immediately found the rootkit (although it was unable to remove it automatically) and 8 other viruses/malware.
That has made me a believer. I highly recommend it.
